Hey $waggers,
Welcome back to another blog post!! Today we are going to be doing our very first DIY post about how to create your own frayed hem denim jeans!! This DIY is super simple and is great for all my short girls out there who struggle to find denim jeans that are short enough in the legs. If you have had enough of folding up every single pair of jeans you own because they are too long, or want to spice up a plain pair of jeans, you need to learn this simple hack!!
What You Will Need
- a pair of jeans
- sewings pins/fabric pencil and ruler
- fabric scissors
- a cheese grater
The Steps
Starting off, take a pair of jeans that may be too long for you or that you would like to change up. I recommend putting on the jeans and then folding them up to the length you would want them to be. When doing this myself, I usually fold my up jeans to be in line with the bottom of my ankle to create that cropped denim look.
Remember when doing this step - you can always cut your jeans shorter later on, so it is best not to fold too high the first time. We can always cut more length off, but we can't put length back on!
Then, carefully take the jeans off keeping the fold in the denim so you have a marking of where you need to cut. You can always use a a few sewing pins to keep the fold in the denim so you know where to cut them. If you trust your judgement with your eyes, you can always skip this step on go straight on to cutting with the scissor but for first timers, I recommend using the folding technique to work out the length of your jeans.
Next, taking some sewing pins, unfold the fold you have made in your jeans and place the pins along the same line as the fold you have crated in the jeans. If you don't have sewing pins, you can always use a fabric pencil and ruler to mark along the jeans. Then, take some fabric scissors and cut along the line where the sewing pins have been placed.
After you have made the cut, try them on again and this is where you can always cut off more if desired.
Then comes the fun part!!
Grab a cheese grater and go to town grating away the end of those jeans!! This step will create that super fashionable fringe hem look! You can always use a pair of tweezers to pull out some strands of jeans which will create more of a distressed look.
Warning - this step can be a little messy with bits of denim flying everywhere so be cautious!
This step is where you can really make a pair of jeans your own. It is totally up to you how much you fringe your jeans so be creative with it!!
Finally, shake off any fly aways and give them a final try on and admire you work of art!
